This is a mid-to-late century SHIPIBO TRIBE face Peruvian pottery bowl from Northern Peru and Amazon Jungle Region.
It's an excellent speciman with a face sculpted into the side of the pottery bowl. Hand painted inside the rim and on all exterior sides with dark brown (black), tan, and red Native earthen paints.
The high gloss finish is typical of the tribe, also made from local tree resin.
The artwork shows Shipibo's traditional geometric patterns. They believe that the jungle rivers follow the same patterns as the stars in the night sky.
Thin walled and fine quality.
Has fire cloud on bottom, made during the firing process.
Condition is very good to excellent, especially for its age.
I do not see any repairs. No cracks or holes.
Size: approx 4" tall x 6" across
